However, from a clinical perspective, they are not the same thing, and their causes can differ significantly. <\/p>\n<p>Dizziness is a more general sensation of instability, disorientation, or faintness. Vertigo, on the other hand, produces a false sensation of movement; the person feels as though they are spinning or that their surroundings are moving, even while remaining still. <\/p>\n<p>This distinction is important because many episodes of vertigo originate in the inner ear. Although we typically associate the ear solely with hearing, it also houses the vestibular system, which is responsible for informing the brain about our body&#8217;s position and movement. These structures work together with vision, the muscles, and the brain to determine at all times where our body is located and in which direction it is moving. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The semicircular canals detect head rotations. The utricle and saccule register linear movements and changes in position relative to gravity. Inside them are small calcium carbonate crystals known as otoliths or otoconia. When they remain in place, they help accurately detect movement. However, if they shift into one of the semicircular canals, they can send a movement signal to the brain that does not match the information received by the eyes and the rest of the body.    <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That contradiction creates the sensation that everything is spinning, even though the person remains still. That is why some episodes occur when getting out of bed, turning the head, looking up, or rolling over while asleep. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, since the structures responsible for hearing and balance are located in close proximity, certain inner ear disorders can simultaneously cause vertigo, <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaudio.es\/en\/degrees-of-hearing-loss-when-you-need-hearing-aids-according-to-your-audiometry-test\/\">hearing loss<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaudio.es\/en\/tinnitus-and-ringing-in-the-ears-what-they-are-causes-symptoms-and-treatment\/\">tinnitus<\/a>, or a sensation of ear fullness.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Clinicaudio, we frequently see patients who present with hearing loss or ringing in the ears and who, during the assessment, also report episodes of instability or vertigo. It typically occurs when getting out of bed, lying down, turning the head, or looking up. The episodes are intense but usually last less than a minute.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It originates from the displacement of otoliths into the semicircular canals, altering the movement-related information received by the brain. Unlike BPPV, the vertigo does not occur solely with specific movements but can persist for hours or even several days.
